an adoptee's journey of getting to know her biological family

October 18, 1936

Dear Folks,

Here it is Sunday again and I am as blue as ever I have been. Navy lost yesterday as you no doubt know. Beside that, it is extremely cool here and the heat isn’t on steady. Still more, we have 3 tests next week for which I have to study. They aren’t to be worried over though, because I have sworn off worrying.

After that game was over yesterday, I could almost have cried. We really won it but just got the tough breaks all the time. Yale didn’t get a point by their superiority but by Navy’s fumblings. The point that won the game was when Schmidt of Navy dropped the ball and Kelly of Yale kicked it in the fray back to Navy’s 2 yard line. Then the referee gave it to Yale, which was a gip, and naturally they pushed it over. The Navy clicked just like a clock on most of their plays and there is confidence that we’ll have a damn good season.

The trip was lots of fun. We all went to the game, the only one besides Army to which all 2300 of us go. To the other games, only half of the regiment go. We took the train at ten five and got in Baltimore at 11:15 or so. We marched thought a big park there to the stadium and then marched in on the field, pictures of which you will undoubtedly see, we manned the stands in one wild rush. While we cheered the movies took pictures of us, so watch them. Boy, we cheered like everything. The upperclassmen say that the spirit this year is swell. In mess hall we fairly made the pillars shake. Believe you–my throat gets exercises. Maybe I can develop a bass voice. One the train we sing and carry on all the time. When we march through the streets we sing a lot too. The eats were provided on the train–a sandwich and a pint of milk on the way up and a sandwich and a cup of coffee on the way back. Of course, we had full sized meals just before leaving and then upon returning at 7:30.

When I got on that train and saw things move, I completely enjoyed myself. Boy, when I get out of here for vacation, I’ll paint everything red. Especially when I get in Paris and London next summer.

Speaking of vacation reminds me, I must have a suitcase before I come home. My little bag won’t quite carry all my things. On the cruise next summer I have to have one anyway so I figure I might as well get one to use for Xmas. Shortly before it’s time to come home, I will look into the prices down here. We get everything at practically the cost so I will be able to do well here.

There isn’t much to tell you about outside of the football games. Everything is just the same, week after week. I went to the Commandant’s Reception last Wednesday which was just about like the Admiral’s. I only stayed long enough to be socially correct and did nothing more than sample the eats and listen to the music. The plebes didn’t dance much if any.

About that Harvard game, I told you I might have a date. Well, it’s like this. The midshipmen who wish to attend a dance that evening after the game sign a list that is brought around. If we don’t have our own drag, some society up here that sponsors the dance for us get us one. Sometimes we get a lemon and sometimes a darn nice girl. Anyway, I’m not particular for one evening, especially after having been in here about five months. The ball is held in the ballroom of one of Boston’s swankiest hotels, so you see we look forward to the trip.

I understand that we leave Annapolis on Friday afternoon, arrive in Philadelphia at nite and take the sleepers for Boston. We get in Boston the next morning–toothbrush, shoran and whisk broom–and stay on the train until it is time to have liberty in town. At a certain time we meet to march to the game and then after the game we have the “ball”. I suppose we take the sleeper back that nite and get in Annapolis Sunday morning. That, understand, is on Nov. 14–4 weeks away.

I guess I have told you everything of interest around here and now for the things up Sodus way.

How do the leaves look up there? Down here they are real green yet and only a few trees are shedding.

Liz spoke about Jerry Knapp being in trouble. I’m glad to hear he came out O.K. but why is he home?

Another thing, what about Liz’s fellow? I don’t hear anything of him. Did she kill him or is he too far away to come around often?

Thanks a lot for the poem. I think maybe I can use it tonite.

Well, I guess I’ll close. They just chased me out to see a Battalion football game and I’ve got to go.

Love,

Reg

P.S. The book came through alright. Thanks.

In regards to my topcoat, I do not want to sell it. When I come home I won’t be living in my uniform any more than is necessary and will take lots of use of my civilian clothes. About the shoes I don’t know what to say. I don’t want to buy new ones unless I have to because I will need all my money at Xmas time that I can get ahold of. Un can wear them but remember I want something besides old, high “clod hoppers” to dance in. Keep them in good shape anyway.

Oh Yes! John has the pictures developed that he took of us. They are very good so I will get some.
