Dear Folks,
You’ve probably heard the news too, by this time and what is more, you probably heard the game. I didn’t. I’m not greatly in love with my upperclassmen so I went out in town to a show (The Ziegfield Follies) instead of either going to the soccer game here or listening to the game. My expectations are that I will get my duff fanned (ass beat) tonite after chow. Well anyway, it’s worth a few socks on the tail.
I guess you were surprised that I called last nite. At least you registered it. Please don’t get the idea that I’m homesick down here and called like Dave used to. The purpose of it was to make Liz a little remembrance on her birthday and that was the only way I had of doing it and getting any satisfaction out of it. I meant to have called around 7:15 but the booths were full and a line waiting when I got up there from chow. Consequently I had to “French out” of my room during study hour and call then. I didn’t get caught and the whole thing was a success except that Sis wasn’t there. I could hear every word you said and could even hear you call to Dad and Ruth (his sister-in-law) and hear the footfalls on the floor. I hope it came in that good on your end.
Tonite is a hop which includes the 3rd classmen so that accounts for the busy booths last nite. The gym is trimmed nicely, palms around, screens up and drapes up. Of course, it is not as beautiful as it is during June week but it looks good to me.
John is on the plebe soccer team so he went to the game today. The reason for the irregularity is that he misses the Harvard and the Pennsylvania games because he has a soccer game on those days. Consequently, the coach fixed it so the soccer team wouldn’t miss all the football trips. It seems that John’s Dad met a wealthy man in New York by the name of Packard and this man is going to meet John at the game. It is very important to us because Mr. Packard has two extremely nice young daughters that wouldn’t be half bad to drag to a dance sometime.
In your letter, which came this morning, you said something about Lawrence. As soon as you hear from him definitely, let me know. It’s ages since there has been any news from Buffalo.
It certainly is bad news about Jack. I certainly feel sorry for him because two days or so after I left home last June I experienced a little of what he is going through. I can just thank my lucky stars that I didn’t wait around two or three years before I started college. One not only forgets a lot in that time, but interest wanes and I fear that happened to Jack. He waited until he didn’t have the spirit to grasp the situation. I sure hope he can come with Charlie to the game next month.
About that money that Aunt Riggs left for me. First of all thank her for me and I will write when the feeling to do so comes at the same time there is leisure. If you haven’t already got something, you may get some common talcum powder. I want it to use as a preventative for ringworm. Speaking of ringworm, I just returned from sick bay for my treatment. I got off the squad last Wednesday or Tuesday and went on again today. I think that with the talcum powder in my room, that I can stay off next time. The idea is to keep the places free from sweat and you can imagine how hard that is to do with a pair of trousers pulled right up tight with suspenders.
There isn’t much more to say, except that I am not on any trees and got through my tests as far as I know, averagely. I have a 750 word composition started for Thursday and so I think that I will not be too rushed next week.
Anytime you wish to send apples, I shall be glad to get them. Those last ones were the “berries”.
I can’t think of anything more to say right now, except what do you hear from Arthur? Seeing that chow is in 35 minutes I had better start cleaning up. I will leave this letter to mail after I come from the show tonite as I might think of something more to say.
Oh yes, I was thinking that if I come home by train at Christmas, that maybe you could come to Watkins to meet me about as easily as you could to Canandaigua. Then I could see Grandma and kill two birds with one stone. Also, as I get in late at nite, it might be more convenient for you. Think it over, will you?
(9:15 P.M.)
The week is over at last. I just returned from the Yard show which was “We’re in the Money”. It was a good comedy and I enjoyed it thoroughly. That makes two shows today, the first time in a long while. One thing I crave is to get behind the wheel of a car and go to a show. That seems more natural, the common way of going to a cinema. I’ll be sending my old logs home soon for you to read and put away for me. A lot of fellows do that. I will wrap them and put on enough postage to get them off. They might charge you a few cents at your end because I am not sure what the postage will be without going down to the post office, for which I do not have the time.
IS THE BANK GOING TO PAY AGAIN?
Love to all,
Reg
